Kulobo Manyango

Nursing Villages to Healthkulobo

Kulobo is one of our sponsored students who is a graduating senior reading nursing at Cuttington University in Liberia. During our recent stay in Fassavolu she worked in the clinic, sharing what she had learned and treating/diagnosing 206 patients with a variety of illnesses and conditions. 85% of those treated were women and children and 36% were under the age of 5.

Kulobo says of her trip, "I would say that my trip to Fassavolu was of great help to my learning experience as a student nurse. I learned a lot from the staff I worked with. I also had the opportunity to educate my colleagues on things they did not know in theory and practice.  I hope to have another opportunity to go back to Fassavolu, and I pray that Rebuild Africa will help bring the clinic in Fassavolu up to a good standard."

varneyVarney Konneh

Preparing the Next Generation

Varney has successfully graduated with honors from Cuttington University in just 2½ years with a degree in Chemistry and Biology. His dream has become reality through a Rebuild Africa leadership development scholarship. Without the scholarship Varney says, "I would just have been one of the many high school graduates of Liberia who do not have the means to get to college due to the lack of support".

Varney how aspires to enroll at the Medical School with the ambition of becoming one of Liberia’s 'dependable' Medical Doctors. "It is my prayer that God will provide more funding for Rebuild Africa to support me to realize this dream".

In the meantime Varney is earning money by" teaching chemistry in a local high school. "I want to say a big thank you to the Rebuild Africa family for your support which has transitioned me from being a liability to my poor parents and other loved ones, to being a provider for them and contributor to the educational development of young people in high school".

The First Five

firstfive2Brimming with Anticipation

In Fassavolu, our Rebuild Africa team met with 'The First Five'. These are the first five family heads to start working on their new houses. Another three family heads have formed a group and are scheduled to begin work soon. In consultation with our experts, the groups have decided that in addition to 2 bedrooms, their houses should include a bathroom, a kitchen, a storage area and front and back porches. A volunteer architect from the US, Jeff Potts, trained our local builder Raymond in AutoCAD, which helps greatly in design.

Our Liberia Field Coorinator, Robert Chiewolo, asked the families about their hopes and dreams.

Morlay Kollie says, "I need a place to live, and to see Rebuild Africa come to help me encourages me to work. Once I have a good place to sleep, I would really love Rebuild Africa to help my children go to school. Now only one of my five children is in school striving to support himself and the rest are not in school because we do not have the money to send them."

Kpanah Jallah says, "Thank God that Rebuild Africa has come with the help I have long prayed for. I am one of the happiest persons being a part of this project. I see this project as an opportunity to develop our town. I’m one person who has always longed to see Fassavolu developed with good houses".

Koryan Gorlai says, "I see Rebuild Africa project as a blessing to my family. Presently I live in a hut that is falling down. I am happy working because I know not too long I will own a modern house I have never dreamed of".

Pa Abraham Jallah says,"If Rebuild Africa continues to operate in Fassavolu in the next five to ten years, I would love that they help improve our health sector, provide opportunities that would make us self-sufficient in food and ensure that our children have access to quality education".

IMPORTANCE OF THE 'SAMPLE HOUSE'

The tangible example of the 'Sample House' provided the people of Fassavolu with evidence of Rebuild Africa's long-term commitment to partner with them in rebuilding their community.
