Fassavolu
Background
Fassavolu is a village of approximately 950 people in the north-western
part of Lofa County, Liberia's most northerly province. Located near
the borders of Sierra Leone and Guinea, Fassavolu was deeply impacted
by Liberia's civil war, which raged from 1989-2003. Many men, women
and children fled the area. Many were killed and maimed. Boys and men
were forced and bribed into the various armies. Evaders fled into the
bush, where many of them survived for years. 75 percent of buildings
in Fassavolu were destroyed and the ones that remained standing cannot
withstand the rain season. The extremely basic education system collapsed
with the spread of the war to Fassavolu in 1994. Today survivors and
returnees have few prospects.
Milestones
Initiated in 2009, the Fassavolu Project happy to report the following:
• A kiln has been built to fire bricks to rebuild homes devastated
by war
• A final team has been selected and trained to make bricks
and to build
• A local carpenter has also been trained to construct frames
and joists
